Getting the right size filter is key to the health of your air conditioning system. If your air filter isn't the right one, it just won't work. A filter that is too small will leave a space where debris and particles can enter; a filter that is too large will not fit in the slot. In this case, you must round to the nearest whole number to determine the nominal size of the air filter.
The actual size of the air filter should be 0.25 to 0.5 cm smaller than the slot or frame itself. Most heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) air filters are 1 inch thick. While this is a standard requirement for most homes, some need thicker filters, 4 to 6 inches. These can withstand more accumulations, which means you'll have to change them less often. A thicker filter can also trap more particles than a standard filter.
However, sometimes, these filters can limit airflow and cause system and air quality problems. Most air filters have their size printed on the side of the frame. The length, width, and depth of the filter are measured in inches. For example, it will say something like “16x25x1”, where 16 is the length, 25 is the width, and 1 is the depth. If the air filter frame doesn't have the sizes listed or looks wrong, you can always measure the air filter yourself.
There are many options to buy air filters conveniently, either a) online, b) through your air conditioning company, or c) in-store. Thicker air filters also have a longer lifespan, since they have a larger surface area for trapping and removing pollutants from the air. If you live in an older house, with a non-standard size air return frame, you may want to use adhesive foam tape to protect the weather to slightly increase the dimensions of your favorite filter, or order a custom-sized air filter. Installing several type 1 air filters in a double slot, for example, can cause costly damage to the air conditioning unit, since residential ovens are not equipped to withstand this level of airflow restriction. In general, filters with 1- and 2-inch air filters are installed in standard air conditioning systems, while 3- to 6-inch filters are installed in larger air conditioning systems.
Then, using a measuring tape, measure the length, width, and depth of the inside of the air filter vent. We recommend that you start your search for a replacement air filter by limiting it to the depth of the air filter. Choosing the right size of air filter for your HVAC system is essential because it allows your HVAC system to work effectively. Understanding how air filter size works is crucial if you want to get the right size for your home or office. This is the easiest and most obvious way to find out what size your AC filter should be but not all filters have their measurements listed on them. Keep in mind that most disposable air filters are on sale (this is an industry standard) and range from ¼ to ½. To sum up: getting an appropriately sized air filter for your home or office is essential for proper HVAC system functioning and improved indoor air quality.
Make sure you measure your current AC filter before buying a new one so that you get one that fits perfectly.
